Officer Involved Shooting

Gardena police shoot a man down after he shot a woman who had broken up with him.

A man is dead after police officers shot him Tuesday after a domestic dispute spilled into the streets of Gardena.

The man, whose name police has yet to release, reportedly began chasing a woman he had been living with and shot her.  After she broke up with him, he chased her towards some businesses near the corner of Western Avenue and 146th Street.

ATVN's Kevin Lu was at the scene as police investigated Tuesday morning's incident.

“They were domestic partners, they had broken up outside her relative’s apartment.  She came out this morning he confronted her, fired at her, chased her around the corner to Western Avenue here, continued shooting at her, and he ended up being confronted by officers,” said Lt. Liam Gallagher of the Sheriff’s Department.

Five officers confronted the man and one officer fired three rounds, Gallagher said.

“I think it was pretty immediate, once they confronted him it was within seconds the officer involved shooting took place,” Gallagher said.  “We will know more after we interview the officers involved.”

The man shot the woman at least three times in the midsection before officers shot him dead.  She is in critical condition and police say there’s a “good possibility” she will survive, Gallagher said.

About a dozen streets on Western Avenue between 145th Street and Marine Avenue were closed for several hours Tuesday morning while police investigated the incident.

The Sheriff’s Department has not released the names of the couple.
