The exhibit features several never before seen images of Cesar Chavez.

Today, Cesar Chavez Day, marks the anniversary of the birth of the Mexican American farm worker, labor leader and civil rights activist Cesar Chavez.

In celebration of his life and legacy, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels opened a photo exhibit today of never before seen photographs of Chavez.

The installation, called “Cesar Chavez: A Spiritual Man of Family, Peace and Action,” features several images taken by Victor Aleman. The exhibit will be on display through April 30.

Aleman worked with Chavez and the United Farm Workers for 10 years. He served as the managing editor of El Macriado, the union’s membership publication. He was also the co-founder of the first farm worker radio station, Radio Campesina KUFW.

Aleman, who is currently the editor of the Spanish-language newspaper of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Vida Nueva, said he wants the exhibit to reveal an unseen side of Chavez.

“This photo exhibit has less to do with pictures of a great human being and far more to do with capturing the essential Cesar Chavez – as he was in daily life, ever powered and ever fueled by his belief in God, loyalty to his church and openness to people of all religious persuasions, Aleman said.
