The Los Angeles Press Club honored Annenberg TV News with three awards Sunday night at its annual Southern California Journalism Awards, presented this year at Downtown L.A.’s Millennium Biltmore Hotel.
ATVN took home the awards for best student television broadcast, best student Web site and best overall news site under a $10,000 budget.
Former executive producer Derek Staahl won both awards for Web site design, while ATVN won best news broadcast for its March 30, 2009 show.
Annenberg Radio News also won for best student radio news broadcast.
The awards were headlined by actor Sean Penn and CNN host Anderson Cooper, who arrived at 5:30 to take pictures with some fellow journalists and returned for the award dinner later on in the night.
Penn awarded Cooper the Presidential Award for impact on media, and Cooper thanked all those who work alongside him at CNN, including his field producer and cameraman.
CBS 2 reporter Dave Bryan was given the Joseph M. Quinn Award for lifetime achievement, and NPR correspondent Anne Garrels was given the Daniel Pearl Award for Courage.
KNBC’s Ana Garcia was named Television Journalist of the Year for the second consecutive year.
