A 4.4-magnitude earthquake rattled much of the Greater Los Angeles area early this morning.
No injuries or major structural damages were reported.
The quake struck at 4:04 a.m. at a depth of 11.2 miles, said the U.S. Geological Survey. Its epicenter was 1 mile east-northeast of Pico Rivera and 11 miles east-southeast of downtown Los Angeles.
The quake may have damaged a section of the Santa Ana Freeway in Downey. The damage consisted of broken concrete on two right-hand lanes in a section of the roadway that had been under repair. The California Highway Patrol shut down the two lanes, causing a huge traffic backup, but reopened them by 6:30 a.m. after a temporary repair.
The quake was felt as far away as San Diego County, according to reports received by the USGS and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
In downtown Los Angeles, the temblor briefly interrupted elevator service in the new Los Angeles Police Department headquarters across from City Hall.
