The Football Writers Association of America Thursday announced its plans to vacate USC’s 2004 Grantland Rice Trophy, and the university will not be considered for the 2010 award.
This award has been given to colleges judged to be the national champion of each season since 1954. This was the first time the FWAA has ever rescinded an award and has yet to name a replacement.
“Due to the NCAA penalties, we understand the actions taken by the Football Writers Association of America, and we will abide by that ruling,” athletic director Pat Haden said in a statement.
“While we know that some fans and former student-athletes may be disappointed, our central priority at this time is our overall commitment to compliance and this action is in line with the standards we have set for our entire athletic program.”
Haden also announced this morning that USC will play a two-game regular season series against the Texas Longhorns. Texas will visit the Coliseum Sept. 16, 2017, and the Trojans will travel to the Lone Star state on September 15 the following year.
The 2017 game will be the first meeting on the football field for the schools since Texas defeated USC for the BCS national title at the Rose Bowl in 2006. USC had won the four previous meetings between the perennial powerhouses, which took place between 1955 and 1966.
“USC versus Texas is a classic match-up and I’m sure fans from both schools, as well as all college football fans, will look forward to these games with much anticipation,” said Haden. “It’s been a long time since USC has played Texas in the regular season, and of course we all remember how exciting the recent bowl game meeting was between the teams.”
Haden announced in the same statement that the final open spot on the 2013 schedule will be filled by a home game against the Utah State Aggies.
Other non-conference opponents through 2018 include Boston College, Hawaii, Minnesota, Syracuse and Virginia.
